Disputes over Noginsk's name have continued since 2000.
Residents of Noginsk in Moscow Oblast held a picket against restoring the city's historical name, Bogorodsk. According to activists, 87% of respondents in their poll supported keeping the name Noginsk. Opponents of the renaming believe the money would be better spent on roads, urban improvements, and utility infrastructure.
The latest debate was prompted by a proposal being discussed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Moscow Oblast Governor Andrey Vorobyev. Activists are collecting signatures against the renaming. They are also concerned about the additional costs of replacing signs, street signs, and documents.
In 2018, Noginsk residents also held pickets and collected signatures against the renaming. At the time, the local administration revived the issue following the creation of the Bogorodsky Urban Okrug, which included Noginsk. The proposal ultimately failed to gain support among residents.
